Chennai is showing what’s possible when science, scale, and resolve come together.Across Perungudi and Kodungaiyur, one of India’s largest biomining programmes is reshaping the urban landscape by converting decades of inherited waste into reclaimed, usable land.At Perungudi, scientific biomining initiated in 2022 has processed 26.35 lakh MT out of 27.50 lakh MT, unlocking 94.29 acres of restored land.At Kodungaiyur, ongoing works launched in 2024 have already processed 22.06 lakh MT from a total of 66.52 lakh MT, with reclaimed pockets now evolving into green zones and community-centric spaces.
